Introduction

Mining generates various employment opportunities especially to the local people hosting a mining project. Although mining projects are commonly led by a team of geologists and mining engineers, the bulk of the employees come from diverse disciplines. A geologist for instance needs the skills of a geologic aide in the sample collection - to prepare the sample bags, label the samples and cut it among its various chores. Of course, he will also need a secretary for the paper works

What is mining?

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals and other materials from the ground.

What are the different stages of mining?

Mining is composed of four (4) stages, these are:

1. Exploration
2. Development and Construction
3. Utilization/Commercial Operation
4. Decommissioning/final mining stage/Rehabilitation stage

What is exploration?

In a bid to help the Province of Ilocos Norte prepare for disasters, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted massive information dissemination to all barangays of the province.

In connection with the observance of the “ National Disaster Consciousness Month” in July 2007 with the theme “SAFE KA BA?”, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Region 1, San Fernando City, La Union had conducted series of lectures in the different public high schools in the region. The ICE team headed by the OIC-Geology Division, Mr. Efren S. Penaflor conducted the activity at the Phil. Science High School, Ilocos Region Campus in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur and at the Ilocos Norte National High School in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on July 18 and 19, 2007, respectively.
